Generally, herbs are widely disturbed, and widespread plants groups, excluding the vegetables and other plants consumed for macronutrients, need, with aromatic properties and used herbs for cooking purposes of flavoring and garnishing the food.  Herbs also have been used for medicinal purposes or fragrances. In Pakistan herbal medicine production is high.  The general usage of the herb differs between medicinal herbs and culinary herbs. Normally leafy green or flowering parts of the plant is considered herbs. Seeds, fruits, bark roots and other parts of the plant are the source of spices. Herbal products are effective and safe in use.  

Herbs and their Benefits

 In Pakistan, the herbal products usage rate is very high. Following are the herbs that can be used for cooking purposes as well as medicinal purposes. 

Curly parsley

 These deep green, serrated leaves curl up from the stem and have a potent fragrance reminiscent of carrot leaves and parsnips. Parsley offers a mild but very clean flavor similar to the parsnips.  You can eat it with Braised Turnips, Preserved Lemon and Parsley Tapenade, Creamy Chicken Soup, etc. 

Medicinal Uses

 Its volatile oils and flavonoids show parsley’s medicinal effects: apiole, terpinolene, appin, myristicin, etc. It offers many therapeutic uses for treating the urinary tract and acts as herbal medicine to treat kidney and bladder stones. 


 Tarragon is a low-lying plant but has long stems with thin oblong leaves. it has a flavor that is common to French cooking ingredients. Tarragon offers faint anise or licorice flavor that is sweet and slightly astringent. You can eat Tarragon with Fried Chicken and can also use in Mustard Cream Sauce. 

Medicinal Uses

 Tarragon in traditional medicine has been used to treat toothaches, upset stomachs, and parents can use it to stave off the intestinal parasite in the children. In addition, just like, parsley, tarragon has been used to induce menstruation. 

Basil (One of the best herbs for cooking)

 There are many forms of basil that include many color variations. However, you can quickly identify the low-growing plant by its thin oval, large, and easily bruised leaves. Basil tastes are sweet, peppery and offer a slightly anise-like aftertaste. You can use the basil with beet salad and clam chowder. 

Medicinal Uses

 Basil has strong antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. It is used traditionally to stimulate the appetite and ease the upset stomach symptoms. In Traditional Chinese medicine, basil is used to support kidney functions and reduce gum ulcers. In the Indian medicine system, basil has been used to treat every condition from itching to malaria, arthritis, and anorexia. Just like the tarragon, one of the significant volatile oil of basil is estragole. It is one of the best used herbal medicine in Pakistan


 Dill has fragile, fragrant flower heads and feathery, and grown tall beautifully. Its flavor is like licorice, intensely aromatic.  You can use it in many dishes like Salmon chowder with Potatoes and Dill, Roasted Chicken with Flowering Onion and Dill, Sour Pickles, Shrimp Salads, etc. 

Medicinal Uses

 Dill and parsley share some standard features like apiole that volatile oil that accounts for their flavors.  It has been used traditionally to ease the upset stomach and to treat GIT disorders. In traditional medicine, it is used to treat sleep disorders like insomnia. In addition, some people give dill infusion or tea to their babies as a colic treatment.
